1. Amazon Linux AMI 2: CVE-2024-49996: Security patch for kernel, kernel-livepatch-5.10.227-219.884, kernel-livepatch-5.10.228-219.884 (Multiple Advisories) Severity 7 CVSS (AV:L/AC:L/Au:S/C:C/I:C/A:C) Published 10/21/2024 Created 12/21/2024 Added 12/20/2024 Modified 02/14/2025 Description In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: cifs: Fix buffer overflow when parsing NFS reparse points ReparseDataLength is sum of the InodeType size and DataBuffer size. So to get DataBuffer size it is needed to subtract InodeType's size from ReparseDataLength. Function cifs_strndup_from_utf16() is currentlly accessing buf->DataBuffer at position after the end of the buffer because it does not subtract InodeType size from the length. Fix this problem and correctly subtract variable len. Member InodeType is present only when reparse buffer is large enough. Check for ReparseDataLength before accessing InodeType to prevent another invalid memory access. Major and minor rdev values are present also only when reparse buffer is large enough. Check for reparse buffer size before calling reparse_mkdev(). 3. Debian: CVE-2024-47712: linux, linux-6.1 -- security update Severity 5 CVSS (AV:L/AC:L/Au:S/C:N/I:N/A:C) Published 10/21/2024 Created 11/12/2024 Added 11/11/2024 Modified 01/28/2025 Description In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: wifi: wilc1000: fix potential RCU dereference issue in wilc_parse_join_bss_param In the `wilc_parse_join_bss_param` function, the TSF field of the `ies` structure is accessed after the RCU read-side critical section is unlocked. According to RCU usage rules, this is illegal. Reusing this pointer can lead to unpredictable behavior, including accessing memory that has been updated or causing use-after-free issues. This possible bug was identified using a static analysis tool developed by myself, specifically designed to detect RCU-related issues. To address this, the TSF value is now stored in a local variable `ies_tsf` before the RCU lock is released. The `param->tsf_lo` field is then assigned using this local variable, ensuring that the TSF value is safely accessed. 5. Debian: CVE-2024-49930: linux, linux-6.1 -- security update Severity 7 CVSS (AV:L/AC:L/Au:S/C:C/I:C/A:C) Published 10/21/2024 Created 11/12/2024 Added 11/11/2024 Modified 01/28/2025 Description In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: wifi: ath11k: fix array out-of-bound access in SoC stats Currently, the ath11k_soc_dp_stats::hal_reo_error array is defined with a maximum size of DP_REO_DST_RING_MAX. However, the ath11k_dp_process_rx() function access ath11k_soc_dp_stats::hal_reo_error using the REO destination SRNG ring ID, which is incorrect. SRNG ring ID differ from normal ring ID, and this usage leads to out-of-bounds array access. To fix this issue, modify ath11k_dp_process_rx() to use the normal ring ID directly instead of the SRNG ring ID to avoid out-of-bounds array access. The intent here is clearly just to reset the length to zero before resubmitting, so switch to calling __skb_set_length(skb, 0) directly. In addition, __skb_set_length() already contains a call to skb_reset_tail_pointer(), so remove the redundant call. The syzbot report came from ath9k_hif_usb_reg_in_cb(), but there's a similar usage of skb_trim() in ath9k_hif_usb_rx_cb(), change both while we're at it. It is possible for an user to provide a malicious 'GSO' packet, total length of 80 bytes. - 20 bytes of IPv4 header - 60 bytes TCP header - a small gso_size like 8 virtio_net_hdr_to_skb() would declare this packet as a normal GSO packet, because it would see 40 bytes of payload, bigger than gso_size. We need to make detect this case to not underflow qdisc_skb_cb(skb)->pkt_len. Amazon Linux 2023: CVE-2024-50036: Important priority package update for kernel Severity 6 CVSS (AV:L/AC:H/Au:S/C:C/I:C/A:C) Published 10/21/2024 Created 02/05/2025 Added 02/14/2025 Modified 02/14/2025 Description In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net: do not delay dst_entries_add() in dst_release() dst_entries_add() uses per-cpu data that might be freed at netns dismantle from ip6_route_net_exit() calling dst_entries_destroy() Before ip6_route_net_exit() can be called, we release all the dsts associated with this netns, via calls to dst_release(), which waits an rcu grace period before calling dst_destroy() dst_entries_add() use in dst_destroy() is racy, because dst_entries_destroy() could have been called already. Decrementing the number of dsts must happen sooner. Notes: 1) in CONFIG_XFRM case, dst_destroy() can call dst_release_immediate(child), this might also cause UAF if the child does not have DST_NOCOUNT set. IPSEC maintainers might take a look and see how to address this. 2) There is also discussion about removing this count of dst, which might happen in future kernels. Amazon Linux 2023: CVE-2024-49960: Important priority package update for kernel Severity 5 CVSS (AV:L/AC:L/Au:S/C:N/I:N/A:C) Published 10/21/2024 Created 02/05/2025 Added 02/14/2025 Modified 02/14/2025 Description In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ext4: fix timer use-after-free on failed mount Syzbot has found an ODEBUG bug in ext4_fill_super The del_timer_sync function cancels the s_err_report timer, which reminds about filesystem errors daily. We should guarantee the timer is no longer active before kfree(sbi). When filesystem mounting fails, the flow goes to failed_mount3, where an error occurs when ext4_stop_mmpd is called, causing a read I/O failure. This triggers the ext4_handle_error function that ultimately re-arms the timer, leaving the s_err_report timer active before kfree(sbi) is called. Fix the issue by canceling the s_err_report timer after calling ext4_stop_mmpd. If we break for_each_pci_dev() loop with pdev not NULL, we need to call pci_dev_put() to decrease the reference count. Add the missing pci_dev_put() after the 'out' label. With VMAP_STACK enabled, kernel stacks are allocated in the vmalloc area: if the stack is allocated in a new PGD (one that was not present at the moment of the efi page table creation or not synced in a previous vmalloc fault), the kernel will take a trap when switching to the efi page table when the vmalloc kernel stack is accessed, resulting in a kernel panic. Amazon Linux 2023: CVE-2024-47742: Important priority package update for kernel Severity 7 CVSS (AV:L/AC:L/Au:S/C:C/I:C/A:C) Published 10/21/2024 Created 02/05/2025 Added 02/14/2025 Modified 02/14/2025 Description In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: firmware_loader: Block path traversal Most firmware names are hardcoded strings, or are constructed from fairly constrained format strings where the dynamic parts are just some hex numbers or such. However, there are a couple codepaths in the kernel where firmware file names contain string components that are passed through from a device or semi-privileged userspace; the ones I could find (not counting interfaces that require root privileges) are: - lpfc_sli4_request_firmware_update() seems to construct the firmware filename from "ModelName", a string that was previously parsed out of some descriptor ("Vital Product Data") in lpfc_fill_vpd() - nfp_net_fw_find() seems to construct a firmware filename from a model name coming from nfp_hwinfo_lookup(pf->hwinfo, "nffw.partno"), which I think parses some descriptor that was read from the device. (But this case likely isn't exploitable because the format string looks like "netronome/nic_%s", and there shouldn't be any *folders* starting with "netronome/nic_". The previous case was different because there, the "%s" is *at the start* of the format string.) - module_flash_fw_schedule() is reachable from the ETHTOOL_MSG_MODULE_FW_FLASH_ACT netlink command, which is marked as GENL_UNS_ADMIN_PERM (meaning CAP_NET_ADMIN inside a user namespace is enough to pass the privilege check), and takes a userspace-provided firmware name. (But I think to reach this case, you need to have CAP_NET_ADMIN over a network namespace that a special kind of ethernet device is mapped into, so I think this is not a viable attack path in practice.) Fix it by rejecting any firmware names containing ".." path components. For what it's worth, I went looking and haven't found any USB device drivers that use the firmware loader dangerously. Huawei EulerOS: CVE-2024-47697: kernel security update Severity 7 CVSS (AV:L/AC:L/Au:S/C:C/I:C/A:C) Published 10/21/2024 Created 01/15/2025 Added 01/14/2025 Modified 01/28/2025 Description In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: drivers: media: dvb-frontends/rtl2830: fix an out-of-bounds write error Ensure index in rtl2830_pid_filter does not exceed 31 to prevent out-of-bounds access. dev->filters is a 32-bit value, so set_bit and clear_bit functions should only operate on indices from 0 to 31. If index is 32, it will attempt to access a non-existent 33rd bit, leading to out-of-bounds access. Change the boundary check from index > 32 to index >= 32 to resolve this issue.
